Case Studies

Taylor & Company’s strategic approach—coupled with controlled, precise, and targeted work—reaps countless benefits for our clients.

Awarding Projects & People

Awards help business development efforts by elevating firms above their competitors. They also provide valuable visual assets for marketing and social-media content. Another benefit of entering professional awards is that prominent jury members review the submissions; jury members are often media professionals or other architects who sit on approval boards, project competition juries, and conference committees. The primary challenge is prioritizing which awards programs are the best matches for our clients’ budgets and goals—whether recognition for a specific project, firm, or individual.

Growing Social Media Presence

Taylor & Company was tasked with growing the social media presence of Innovative Housing Opportunities (IHO), a nonprofit affordable housing developer based in Irvine. The organization’s goals were to increase awareness of their work, attract potential hires, and encourage donations and contributions. Prior to engaging Taylor & Company, IHO had not been active on social media for several months, and its various existing channels were not coordinated. The team lacked a social media strategy and an understanding of how different platforms functioned.

One Project, Multiple Angles

Jeremy Levine Design tasked Taylor & Company with promoting a weekend/vacation home designed and owned by firm founder Jeremy Levine, Assoc. AIA. His primary objective was to generate inquiries from potential Los Angeles-area clients to hire Levine’s firm for its green-residence expertise. A guru in the field, Levine has displayed his eco-home design innovations in several Discovery Channel house-renovation segments. Levine’s secondary motivation: increasing rental occupancy on days his family isn’t using the house.

Planned Leadership Transition

Amid abrupt workplace changes in 2021 imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, CO Architects implemented a strategic leadership transition. The employee-owned firm, established in 1986, concluded that 20-plus-year employee Jenna Knudsen, AIA, had the experience and vision to serve as CO’s next Managing Principal, the firm’s top officer. Taylor & Company’s messaging challenge: emphasize that this leadership succession was the culmination of careful planning, largely orchestrated by the firm’s outgoing Managing Principal and CO’s 10 additional Principals. Paramount was reinforcing that the leadership change was deliberate so as to inspire confidence within the AEC industry and CO’s clients.

Project Lifecycle

Taylor & Company was hired by CO Architects to maximize exposure for Palomar Medical Center (PMC), a $1-billion sustainable hospital in Escondido, CA. The architects conceptualized a functional and flexible vertical garden hospital thought of as “the hospital of the future.” At the time of its groundbreaking, PMC was the largest building under construction in California. Because of PMC’s size, scope, and pioneering elements, there was great potential for a wide range of stories throughout the project’s lifecycle.

Understanding Landscape Architecture

The general public—and even some in the AEC industry—consider landscape architects “gardeners with college degrees.” Taylor & Company’s challenge was to showcase client Surfacedesign’s industry-leading expertise in design and materials selection, elevating perception of the profession in the process. Focusing on the broad range of client types—from airports to wineries—demonstrated the firm’s flexibility and felicity with various typologies.

Speaking to Client Audiences

Taylor & Company’s clients derive several benefits from serving as industry spokespeople—elevating thought-leadership stature, demonstrating expertise in front of people who hire architects, and recruiting by presenting the firm as an exciting place with interesting projects. To gain speaking slots, it’s essential to plan ahead, as conferences are often booked many months in advance. We keep an active calendar of conferences that cover a wide range of topics applicable to our clients—real estate, healthcare, education, housing, hospitality, etc.—and suggest strategic events to both speak at and attend.

Strategic Positioning

Taylor & Company strategically promoted McIntosh Poris’ commitment to preserving Detroit’s design legacy and transforming the city’s urban landscape. This involved securing widespread positive coverage for the firm, positioning its representatives as advocates for Detroit’s revitalization, and leveraging the cultural interest in the city’s architectural renaissance.

Promoting a Diverse Portfolio

Relativity Architects (RA), a Los Angeles-based architecture and design firm (now known as Bell Design Group), sought to showcase its diverse portfolio and expertise across multiple business sectors, including affordable and senior housing, creative studios, chic hotels, restaurants, and retail projects. The challenge was to position RA as a versatile and innovative firm that nevertheless maintains a consistent approach to design.

Thought Leadership

Architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry hall-of-famer and HOK CEO Emeritus Patrick MacLeamy, FAIA, wrote a book chronicling his 50-year career at the global architecture and engineering firm. The book’s release coincided with the pandemic. Patrick retained Taylor & Company to promote the book at a time when face-to-face interviews weren’t possible.

Client Bylines Elevate Industry Leadership

Some architects like to write about their work; most would rather spend their time doing design work than key-stroking about it. Byline articles, especially with the assistance of the firm’s PR partner, are a key way to impart expertise, knowledge, and new ideas in the architect’s voice. Appearing in client-focused outlets, bylines bolster business development and thought leadership. As well, they improve SEO and GEO (AI Generative Engine Optimization), build individual portfolios for industry awards, and position experts for speaking engagements, among other benefits.
