LOS ANGELES: Senior Designer and Manager Lisa Pauli, AIA, brings more than 10 years of experience to R&A Architecture + Design of Culver City, CA.  From finely detailed interiors, to large urban developments, her award-winning projects are based on strong client relationships, collaborative design, and cross-disciplinary investigations.

“Lisa has a great ability to organize design teams and work with developers on complex, multi-use projects,” says R&A Partner Shawn Gehle, Assoc. AIA.  “We are fortunate that she is now part of our team with a skill set that will benefit our projects, whether they are large or small, as we expand the scope of our services.”  R&A—a fast-growing architecture, interiors, and planning firm—has a strong portfolio of mixed-use projects comprising combinations of housing, workspace, retail, and hospitality.

As a licensed architect, Pauli takes pride in her ability to design and manage the construction of a wide variety of building types and scales.  “Each project is an opportunity to explore basic elements—light, materials, structure, form, context—in a site-specific way,” she says.

Before joining R&A in 2017, Pauli was a Senior Associate and regional practice area leader of mixed-use developments at Gensler in Los Angeles.  Among her most transformative projects at that firm is the River Oaks District, an upscale shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in Houston that won an award from the Urban Land Institute (ULI).  “This was a feat of urban design in creating a beautiful, walkable place for such a car-centric city,” recalls Pauli.

One of Pauli’s influential mentors is Maya Lin, whose best-known design is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.  Pauli worked for Lin in New York City before she studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  “Maya was one of the most dedicated people I’ve ever worked with,” Pauli recalls.  “She commanded a strong presence in every client situation.  From her, I learned the importance of staying true to a strong, clear, design vision.”

In 2010, Lisa received a Master of Architecture degree from MIT, where her academic work focused on parametric modeling, digital fabrication, and infrastructure-driven development.  Six years earlier, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in interior design from the University of Texas at Austin.

At R&A, Pauli is eager to contribute to the future of architecture through her design and management of diverse projects.  “There are many events and technological advancements that are going to affect the way we design and occupy buildings, from driverless cars to shifts in urban populations,” she says.

R&A Architecture + Design is a young, energetic firm focused on creative solutions in multiple scales and typologies, including commercial, hospitality, residential, and mixed-use.  With offices in Culver City, CA, and Portland, OR, the firm has grown rapidly from a studio of five to more than 35 since its inception.  Founded in 2013 by two award-winning Principals, Christian Robert, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, and Benjamin Anderson, Assoc. AIA, and joined by Principal Shawn Gehle in 2017, R&A globally leverages a broad portfolio of experience in transformative architecture and interiors projects.
