LOS ANGELES: R&A Architecture + Design, a fast-growing architecture, interiors, and planning firm, elevates Lisa Pauli, AIA, and Michael Contento, AIA, to Design Director, and Scott Walter, AIA, to Technical Director.  With offices in Culver City, CA, and Portland, OR, R&A has grown from a studio of five to more than 35 since its inception in 2013.  It currently has several commercial, hospitality, multi-tenant, and mixed-use projects in development across West Hollywood, Culver City, Los Angeles Arts District, San Francisco, Oregon, and Utah, as well as creative office interiors in Los Angeles, New York City, London, Berlin, and Sydney.

Lisa Pauli, AIA, has been promoted to Design Director.  From finely detailed interiors, to large urban developments, her award-winning projects are based on strong client relationships, collaborative design, and cross-disciplinary investigations.  In her short time with the firm, she has elevated the design culture within the office, and ensured quality design is achieved at every level.  She leads complex projects, such as the Summit Powder Mountain Residences and Institute at Summit Powder Mountain in Eden, UT, and the 9th and Hill revitalization project in Downtown Los Angeles.  “R&A is a research-driven architecture and design firm whose work is simultaneously rigorous and experimental,” says Pauli.  “We approach conventional situations with unconventional means, collaborating across multiple disciplines to create the most appropriate, most interesting solutions.”  In 2010, Pauli received a Master of Architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, where her academic work focused on parametric modeling, digital fabrication, and infrastructure-driven development.  In 2004, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in interior design from the University of Texas at Austin.

Michael Contento, AIA, winner of the 2012 Venice Biennale Golden Lion, has been promoted to Design Director.  He serves as Project Lead on a diverse portfolio of project typologies, including multi-family housing, mixed-use, hospitality, creative office, and commercial.  He manages multiple teams through the design process from concept design to construction documentation, and acts as a critical liaison between clients, consultants, and municipal agencies.  He leads efforts on several projects, including Sunset Tower and the French Market revitalization in West Hollywood, CA, and 488 San Vicente, a seven-story mixed-use development in Los Angeles, CA.  “Each project with R&A represents an opportunity to participate in design innovation and thoughtful experimentation,” notes Contento.  In 2006, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in architecture from Pennsylvania State University in State College, PA.  He went on to receive his Master of Architecture degree in 2009 from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation in New York City.

Scott Walter, AIA, has been promoted to Technical Director.  His specialty is translating key design concepts into built form and providing oversight and quality control for technical document production.  Walter’s work has been awarded by several chapters of the American Institute of Architects, along with the Westside Urban Forum, Los Angeles Business Council, and the City of Beverly Hills.  He leads efforts on multi-family projects, such as The Harland in West Hollywood, CA, and the Hope Avenue and Overland & Tabor Apartments in Los Angeles, CA.  “R&A’s work incites a refreshing approach to the potential of all client projects,” explains Walter.  “The office’s energetic outlook, combined with its depth and breadth of experience, results in projects that deliver unexpected results and remarkable architecture.”  He graduated in 1994 from the University of Florida in Gainesville with a Bachelor of Design in architecture.  Walter later earned a Master of Architecture degree in 1998 from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

R&A Architecture + Design is a young, energetic firm focused on creative solutions in multiple scales and typologies, including commercial, hospitality, residential, and mixed-use.  R&A transforms local communities through creative solutions and embraces intensive research to deliver fresh, new thinking at every point of the design process.  It values how curiosity feeds creativity, and how creative approaches yield innovative answers.  Founded in 2013 by two award-winning Principals, Christian Robert, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, and Benjamin Anderson, Assoc. AIA, and joined by Principal Shawn Gehle in 2017, R&A globally leverages a broad portfolio of experience in transformative architecture and interiors projects.
